NHL Not Backing Potential Canada-Russia Summit Series In '12

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly on Monday said that the league "would not back a 40th anniversary renewal of the historic Canada-Russia Summit Series in September 2012," according to Andrew Podnieks of the N.Y. TIMES. Hockey Canada has confirmed that it "held preliminary talks for a new Canada-Russia Summit Series," but a blessing of the idea "does not seem forthcoming from the NHL." Daly in an e-mail said, "We don't think that endorsing a re-creation of a Summit Series utilizing NHL players is appropriate given the current makeup of the NHL." Podnieks noted one issue "blocking a potential reprise of the series is that the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and its players is set to expire on Sept. 15, 2012." The games "would be a reprise of the 1972 series between Canada and the Soviet Union, which is universally recognized for linking the previously closed worlds of North American and European hockey and changing the face of the game forever." Russian and Swedish reports indicated that the Summit Series proposal "calls for eight games as in 1972 -- four in Canada, four in Russia." One of the Russia games "would be in Sochi, to help promote the 2014 Olympics, and two others would probably be played in Moscow and St. Petersburg." The Canada games "might start in Vancouver, then go to either Calgary or Edmonton, then Toronto, and, finally, Montreal"
